Opening your eyes to Sierra Leone through Polaroid

29 March 2020
girl, sierra leone street photography

At the start of 2020, I embarked on a trip to Sierra Leone, Africa with my friend Bryan (@bryannicolamaxwell). For 15 days we immersed ourself in the local culture, sleeping in the houses of the locals, eating with them and sharing stories.

The collection aims to show a different side of the country, its light and the people within it. Something which has been unfairly left out by journalism over recent years. The lens acted as a bridge between our two cultures and encouraged the people to open up and allow me to see into their lives.

The group of photos is different from anything I have done before. My work has often focused on static objects or landscapes, while I enjoy it, the photos can often lack a sense of emotion and human connection. I wanted to challenge myself on this trip and also challenge you and your own ideas.

Background

The photos were taken in collaboration with Slow Food International, a charity which aims to reinvigorate people’s interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.  Slow Food promotes true enjoyment of good food, and food production systems that provide good, clean and fair food for everyone.

Every time I took a polaroid, I offered it to the subject in exchange for another picture. This allowed me to see people from two different viewpoints. In the second photo, the focus was on the subject’s hands rather than the person themselves.

I left the country feeling fulfilled and full of gratitude. It really was a trip of a lifetime, something I hope to have done justice too in the photos.

Take a look below.

What struck me the most was the human resilience that every individual showed despite their situation, their warmth to others and their openness.

Although there were differences in our childhood experiences, shown here by the hands. There were also many similarities including innocence and joy for life.

Much like the western world, family was an important part of everyday life as well as the local community.

Must Visit: Luxembourg City in autumn

20 February 2020

Luxembourg.  Not a country you often hear on people’s bucket lists, however, after visiting last year I’m going to argue that it should be. Situated between France, Germany and Belgium, Luxembourg can, at times get overshadowed by its powerhouse neighbors. But Luxembourg has more than enough to offer, whether you’re an avid hiker, keen cyclist or luxury traveler, Luxembourg can help you satisfy your holiday needs.

luxembourg in autumn, city of luxembourg

Before my first visit (Autumn 2019), Luxembourg was an enigma to me. I had virtually no expectations and jumped onto the airplane with an open mind.

How to get there

Given Luxembourg’s location and its status as the capital of Europe, you can travel to and from the city to almost anywhere in the world. The country itself is one of the smallest in Europe meaning you can drive across the country in just over one hour. The plane journey from Barcelona took me a little over two hours making it the perfect destination for a weekend trip.

Once you arrive there are various ways you can travel around, from trams to buses to trains, take your pick.

modern old luxembourg

The tale of two cities

In Luxembourg, both past and present live together in harmony. I know what you’re thinking, ‘isn’t Luxembourg just banks, banks, and more banks?’ It’s okay, I forgive you, after all, there are a whopping 150 banks for just 150,000 inhabitants. But I’m also here to tell you, you’re wrong.  UNESCO named Luxembourg City as a world heritage site a little over 20 years ago and it’s easy to see why.

Built on different levels and with over 23km of casemates tunnels and bunkers, an afternoon spent exploring the old town is a must-do when visiting the city. Although Autumn may seem an unconventional time of year to visit, I felt like this is the season where the city comes to life given its large percentage of green space, it also provided great contrast to the cities both traditional and modern buildings.

As I mentioned, Luxembourg also has a modern side to it. Think crisp lines, geometric patterns and bright lights.

concert hall luxembourg, buildings luxembourg

The philharmonie, also known as the Grande-Duchesse Joséphine Charlotte Concert Hall is quite possibly my favorite building in the city and not just because it looks great in photographs. To me it’s everything a modern-day building should be, thought-provoking, engineered to perfection and memorable.

What to do

As I’ve mentioned, there really is something for everyone but for me, the museums in Luxembourg are what really make it shine. My favourite is definitely the National Museum of History and Art. Set in the center of the city, the Museum showcases objects, trinkets and more to give you an insight into the Luxembourg of the past. Statues can also be found all around the city, why not spend the afternoon seeing how many you can find?

History

If you haven’t already guessed it, Luxembourg is full to the brim of history. Everywhere you look there’s something to see, touch or do. There’s buildings, streets and even walls that help to form the Luxembourg we see today.

In my opinion, Luxembourg manages to take the best from its three neighbors and add a sprinkle of its own personality. A real hidden gem.

2019 In Pictures – My Favourite shots of the year

3 February 2020

With 202o in full swing, I find myself reflecting on the 2019 and of course, the photos that go with it.

With 2019 being one of my busiest and most exciting yet, from my partnership with the Porsche magazine 9OncePlus which saw me test drive and place the spotlight on a different model of Porsche each month to my continuing work with the Geneva Tourism board, I’ve explored, documented and taken well over 25,000 photos.

It would be impossible to show you every photo I’ve taken this year without you getting bored and the bandwidth on your internet giving up, so instead, I’ve selected what I believe are my best 18, showcasing the variety of my projects taken across the globe.

Looking to 2020 there is even more variety, more projects and of course more photographs. I kicked off the new decade in Sierra Leone where I caputured all that the country has to offer both light and dark – Stay tuned for the blog post.

I hope your 2020 has gotten off to a great start, now on to the photos!

Geneva, Switzerland’s beloved capital of peace. Popular with both business and leisure travelers alike, the city offers the chance to escape the normal hustle and bustle of a metropolis while still serving up plenty of culture, entertainment and a well-renowned food and drink scene. I’ve been lucky enough to visit the city several times for business, which has allowed me to build up my own personal Geneva city guide.

Whether you’re visiting in the height of summer or the depths of winter, I have the perfect places to make your trip a once in a lifetime experience.  Keep reading for my recommendations!

Screenings change daily so it’s best to check what’s on before you go.

Les Bain des Paquis

Okay, so this one isn’t technically seasonal but you can’t argue that it would be better with a little bit of sunshine. A relatively new edition to the city, the man-made beach is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon. For those with slightly more energy, there is also a diving board where you can jump into Lake Geneva (Cost €5). With a view of the famous Jet d’Eau and dogs and barbeques also permitted, there’s something for everyone,  it’s one of my must do’s when visiting.

Visit Mont Salieve

On top of most people’s to-do list when they visit a new place, you would usually find ‘visit a viewpoint’, most people love to climb up high and admire the city from above taking in all the sights that a place has to offer. Mont Salieve is Geneva’s very own viewpoint. Why not take up a picnic and take in the view with a spot of lunch.

What could be better than refueling with Raclette, the famous fondue style of eating is one of Switzerland’s most famous food traditions. Made from the milk of an Alpine cow, Raclette is a  hard cheese, which is then melted in a giant wheel and poured over different foods, cheese heaven!

Christmas Markets

I know what you’re thinking, we’re not in Germany. But the Swiss Christmas markets are still worth a visit. Given Geneva’s international nature, the markets are a celebration of Christmas treats from across the globe; Mulled wine? Check.  Frankfurts? Check. Churros? Check. For the more adventurous, there is also an ice rink, allowing you to spin, twirl and twist to your heart’s content. Perfect for burning off all those Churros! All the vendors are NGO’s, so you can spread a little Christmas cheer.

Following on from the food, a holiday wouldn’t be complete without a couple of drinks…

Unfortunately, this is bar is only open during the summer months but if you’re lucky enough to be in the area, it’s a must-visit. With hammocks and an envious view, it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset and play some bowls, it’s not just for the over 60’s!

Visiting for longer than a weekend? Make sure you tick these activities off your list…

Watch the Sunset from The Mouette

What could be more romantic than watching the sunset from the comfort of a boat? While it may not be the Titanic, the city’s taxi boat service does offer great views of the city and is a novelty way to between different hotspots in the center. And the best part? It’s free!

Its charming streets are crammed full of boutiques, cafes, and bars, it’s unrecognizable from times gone by and is now the ‘place to be’ for young people. There’s also a farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday, a great chance to sample local produce.

Barcelona: The City Guide, Vol I.

18 September 2019
view from tibidabo barcelona

Barcelona, a city I’ve called home for some time now, loved by tourists and locals alike. Lots of people have their own opinion on the best food, attractions and beaches that the city has to offer, so today I thought I’d walk you through the city myself. My own mini guide to one of Europe’s most beloved hotspots.

Barcelona Cityscape, Whotel

Firstly and most importantly in my opinion; where to eat? You can’t enjoy the rest of the city if you’re fighting the stomach grumbles now can you. Of course Barcelona is famed for its Tapas, Pintxos but you can please even the most picky eater with a wealth of choice and restaurants available.

brunch barcelona, healthy food

El Arbol – Brunch is fast becoming an institution throughout the city, with new restaurants popping up every week. This one offers modern twists on Brunch classics. A perfect cure to any hangover if you’ve been out partying with the locals the night before.

antic teatre, scenic, bars barcelona

Antic Teatre – One of my favourite spots within the city. Originally an abandoned theatre, the bar came to be when its owners needed to find a way to keep the project going. Mull over the days events in the courtyard decorated with fairy lights, it offers a space of tranquillity in the middle of Barcelona’s bustling streets.

tapas in barcelona

Sol Soler – Located in the neighbourhood of Gracia, this is one of my favourite spots for Tapas. THE best chicken wings I have ever had. It also gives you the perfect excuse to explore the area, with its laid back cool vibe, it’s a popular hotspot for the young and old.

Okay, now that you are suitably satisfied. Where to visit? Barcelona is one of the few cities I believe truly has something for everybody. You can spend the morning on the beach, watch the sunset from the mountains and visit a football stadium in between.

barcelona city fountain show

palau de musica ceiling

Palau de la Música: A place I still think remains under the radar for most long weekenders. While Gaudi remains at the top of everybody’s list, this offers something a little different. Situated in El born, the concert hall doesn’t look like much from the outside but behind closed doors is a marvel of 20th Century modernism. Definitely worth checking out.

estacion de francia barcelona, cityscape

Estación de Francia- Functional and beautiful, the station is the second busiest within the city. Built in 1926 and opened in 1929, the building is full of hidden statues, and marvellous structures. Be sure to find the station’s two owls if you visit, strategically placed to keep away those pesky pigeons!  The city’s Zoo and Arc de Triomf are all within walking distance too, the perfect afternoon.

Bunkers el Carmel – City air got too much for you? Breathe in some fresh air away from the hustle and bustle and get amazing views at the same time. While there’s no denying the place can feel a little over crowded. It’s my favourite place to get a view of the whole city. My top tip would be to get there around 6pm, carry up some take-away pizza and watch the sun go down. Perfect.

bunkers barcelona

More recommendations

If you’re spending more than just a weekend here, or you’ve visited before and want to try something new; the city is a stone’s throw away from other iconic Spanish destinations.

monserratt

Montserrat: Just an hour outside of Barcelona by train, Montserrat is truly breathtaking. Take the Cable Car up to the top for the best views!

sea view of barcelona, sitges

Sitges: Well known in Catalonia for its Carnival. Sitges is a compact little town South West of the city. Quiet during the off-season the town comes alive during the Summer months, boasting all night parties and fun. Full to the brim with galleries and museums, Sitges can satisfy anybody’s taste buds.

field in pendeles region, cataluna photographers

Penedès Region: The perfect backdrop for any countryscape photograph to remember your trip. The region is world renowned for its production of Cava and other catalan wines. With a variety of companies offering tours of vineyards and tasting experiences, block out an afternoon to explore the rest of Cataluna with a glass of bubbles, you won’t be disappointed!

Top tips for Barcelona

Ask the locals – The high volume of tourists throughout the year means a lot of places are busy year round, making it easy to fall into the trap of only seeing one side of the city and a crowded one at that! Speak to the locals to find some hidden gems.

Satisfy your Wanderlust – Barcelona is full of winding streets, it’s one of my favourite places to ‘get lost’ in. Put down your Google Maps for the afternoon and see what you can find.

sagrada famalia at night

Don’t just go to the beach – The biggest mistake you can make is just sitting on the beach. Most of the authentic experiences to be had in Barcelona take place away from the sand. If you want a ‘beach’ holiday there are plenty of other Spanish cities with nicer beaches too!

Live according to ‘Spanish’ Time – This is one of the things I found the hardest when I first moved to the city but it really will help you make the most of your time in BCN. It is perfectly normal to still be eating dinner at 1 am, so pack some snacks!

pl.espanya barcelona

Be vigilant but enjoy yourself – Over the years, the city has built up a reputation of pick-pocketing, while it’s something to keep in mind, particularly in tourist areas. Make sure you still enjoy yourself. You’re in one of Europe’s best cities after all! barcelona at night

Have you visited Barcelona? Where were your favourite places in the city?

Express trip to Las Vegas: 24 hours in Sin City

4 June 2019

A trip to Las Vegas, something you’ll see on almost any US travel bucket list. From the bright lights, to the casinos, the city is a mecca for anyone wishing to live it up and forget their troubles for a while, or at least until the sun comes up.

The state of Nevada is famous for its vast desert planes and Vegas is its lighthouse, providing shining light to anyone wishing to seek refuge from the heat and the sand. It is difficult to imagine how they built such a big city in a dry and barren place.

As a travel photographer, I immortalized my stay in the city, and came back with some cool shots!

Many people, myself included, have a preconceived idea about Vegas. Often described as ‘Sin City,’ Vegas is everything you would want in an adult version of Disneyland, bright lights, extravagance, and atmosphere around every corner.

So what did I get up too?

With just 24 hours in the city, the strip was the first place on my whistle-stop tour. Looking down the street you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in five separate cities; with each hotel based around a famous city from little venice, to paris and new york, giving you a glimpse of what life is like in each retrospective place.

Best viewed from the Stratosphere Tower, Las Vegas’s crowning jewel. Standing at over 350m, the view from the top is magical and you can visit the theme park at the top! Well, it is Disneyland for adults after all.

I am glad that I was able to tick Las Vegas off my list but much like a summer love affair it was a once in a lifetime thing. It’s unapologetically loud, brash, tacky and colourful and I admire that – it does what it says on the tin. But over time, the tin rusts, the colour fades and we paint over it for something new.

And remember… What happens in Vegas.. Stays in Vegas.

Crayon grey Porsche 911 991 GT3 MKII

15 March 2019

This is the latest automotive editorial work I did for 9Once Plus. Mainly distributed in Spain and Latin America, it is the reference as Spanish speakers Porsche Magazine.

As an automotive photographer I had the privilege to shoot this exclusive sport car in the luxury PGA Catalunya Resort, 1 hour far away from Barcelona. Midday sunlight was quite hard, but I could access the commodities of the resort to take some static and panning shots.

This new Porsche 911 is definitely is one of the most iconic cars ever made. Every car enthusiast dreams about owning a GT3 one day. I had the chance to meet and shoot its latest version, the 991.2, Finished in a classy Crayon Grey.

With a 500hp flat 6, PDK gearbox, Bose audio system, leather, and carbon seats, this GT3 is absolutely incredible.

What I like the most about this car is the fact that it is really easy and comfortable to drive every day, and can be used as a track toy for the weekend.

IBTM World 2018 in Barcelona – HotelMap

12 December 2018

A few weeks ago at the end of November, I’ve been assigned by my client HotelMap based in London. As an event photographer, I had to take pictures of their stand during IBTM World 2018, the leading global event for the meetings, incentives, conferences and events industry, taking place annually in Barcelona.

HotelMap is a brilliant hotel booking platform for events and trade shows. There are not selling anything on the site, they created a fun environment to present the brand.

The stand was massive, very central and you could charge your phone and use the Internet for free. It is a place where people meet, but also draw. There were 4 big tables with designs that represented all the continents.

I spent two days taking pictures of their stand. Then after finishing my work, it was also a good opportunity for me to talk with destinations in order to present them my travel photography book. One of my objectives in the next few years is to develop collaborations with tourism boards in order to create content to promote the destinations and feed their bank images.

A BIG thanks to the HotelMap’s team for the good fun !

Porsche Madness – Rennsport Reunion VI

20 October 2018

Amid my most recent outing to the States, I had the astounding chance to go to the most remarkable Porsche Super-fan gathering. The Rennsport Reunion occurred at the WeatherTech Race Track Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. After the Stuttgart Museum, this celebration is the journey of any Porsche super-fan. This year in excess of 80,000 individuals going to, 50 historic drivers, nearly 2,500 races and road autos were in plain view. 2018 confirmations the 70th commemoration of the incredible german brand; in plain view the primary model at any point made until the last one. The Rennsport takes place each 3 or 4 years in United States. When I got the news concerning the occasion, my normal reaction was to book tickets and travel over the world to go to the World’s biggest Porsche Festival: Rennsport Reunion VI.     When I touched base in America, I leased an auto in San Francisco and advanced toward Monterey. So eager to see the show, and in the wake of one monotonous night resting in my auto: I was the first in. At 7 a.m. the Racetrack was shrouded in an extremely common Californian mist. Fortunately nobody was yet near, I picked that minute to take photos of the Historic 718 RS 60 Spyder, RS Spyder and the 959 Rally Car (in Rothman’s livery).

The new Porsche 911 991 Speedster & 935

Porsche used this occasion to present to the general population two new models: the 911 991 Speedster and the 935. The first one will be delivered in 1948 exceptional models, an intriguing sum comparing to the time of introduction of the principal Porsche at any point made: Porsche 356.   To commend the 70th commemoration of the homologation of the first Porsche, the German brand made an hommage to the ancestress of 1948.     The second auto introduced that day is the 935 with a restricted release of 77 models. The 935 is not street legal and the lucky owners are carefully selected.       With this selective new auto, Porsche draws near to the VIP program of Ferrari (FXX), Mclaren (P1GTR) and Aston Martin (Vulcan). The artfulness of the customer base was extremely considered with the end goal to deliver top of the line selective auto that just a couple of fortunate clients could appreciate. Everybody hopes that this one is the first of a long serie of selective models.

The Chopard Heritage Display

The recognized Chopard Heritage Display was showing numerous notable autos, predominantly known for beating record and for their utilization amid renowned races (the 24h du Mans, Daytona, 1000km of Nürburgring, Can Am and so on.). Additionally on composition numerous artistic creations, watches and bits of craftsmanship. While the essential creation Porsche to get off the line (a 1948 356) was accessible at the event, it was the Type 64 that genuinely started everything. Worked by Ferdinand “Ship” Porsche in 1939, the Type 64 was unique from various perspectives; to be particular: the way in which the explorer sat behind the driver. It may have quite recently made 40 hp, yet the seeds were sown for a champion among the best automakers ever.     The Chopard Heritage Display that grandstands Porsche’s vision and basic occasions in time. In display view were autos indicating best perspectives of Porsche hustling history to provide for motorsport and motoring fans. Every vehicle in the accumulation was decided for its promise to Porsche’s hustling triumphs, street auto building and execution commonness. Chopard Heritage Display, allowed us need to investigate and review history.

959 Parking Only

After my glance through the Chopard Heritage Display, I found interest for the 959 parking. The Area was loaded with 959, beyond anyone’s ability to see. 15 of the 337 delivered were before me, It was such an extraordinary introduction of these magnificent autos. The two 959 orange and green brought by the 959 North America merchant Bruce Canepa were completely heavenly.

The exhibitors area

Amid the presentation of Michelin, I additionally found a solid enthusiasm for the shaded arranged, with a colorful combo.     The Singer Vehicle Design got my eyes because of its fine technicity blending current instrument and retro outline.     I was astonished by the innovation and execution of the cross breed planning by the Vonnen Boost Technology. It compares to an established 911 model where the motor’s flywheel has been adjusted with an electrical engine, torque and power specifically added to the crankshaft of the auto shaping an ideal condition of artfulness, innovation and class. This electric pack enables you to get the ideal hybrid, with a puissance expansion of 350 hp changing a 911 into a rocket.       The parking were also full of jewels with interesting combos.     You recognize the manual gearbox of the Carrera GT? This is for sure the best V10 car of all time!   I saw probably 6 of them during the day.

The paddocks and racetrack of Laguna Seca

The Rennsport Reunion, is likewise the event to observe super-autos in real life. The Racetrack setup gave me the chance to stand appropriate beside it and photo a few great present day auto races.          I’ve been extremely inspired by the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO and found fantastic how this auto was made to beat records and hotshot the matchless quality of Porsche. Ruling the on-track procedures, in any event as far as through and through speed, was the 919 Hybrid Evo.

The final line up

Ceasing by the Parking was the chance to see Porsches all things considered, designs and hues out of vision. All autos were uncovered on the landing line toward the finish of the occasion, permitting an ideal consummation following one day spent at the amazing Porsche Festival: Rennsport Reunion VI. I can hardly wait for the following one.             That day during the evening I took the road for the stupendous Grand Canyon, 1000km far from the course.

The United States Navy Blue Angel In The San Francisco Bay

11 October 2018

There are the United States Navy Blue Angel, and they are showing off only once per year in San Francisco during the Fleet Week. If you like planes, see your taxes burning and the smell of kerosen, you will like this photography series.

I am a traveling photographer and I recently made a trip to the western US. I had no idea about this air show when I arrived in the city. Believe me, when I say this, the first time I saw an F18 Hornet flying only a few hundred meters above my head, I had no idea of what was going on.

While exploring the bay during two days, I made this series of the US NAVY planes doing acrobatics in the middle of the city. It was absolutely magnificent how pilots could coordinate together and realize the pirouettes. What a show!
