Situated on the Costa Dorada (“Golden Coast”), these gorgeous beaches reachable by public transports are only 1 hour far from Barcelona, near Tarragona. A day trip there is a wonderful idea, and it is a real paradise for beach lovers. There are 2 beaches: the “Cala Fonda“ (also called by locals Waikiki Beach in honor of Hawaiian beach), and the “Cala de la Roca Plana“.
If you’re living in Barcelona, I guess you’re pissed off to hear each 5 minutes “CERVEZA BEER WATER!”. Because of the mass tourism, beaches in Barcelona city are terribly dirty and always super crowded. Waikiki or Roca Plana are for sure less invaded, so you can really enjoy a sunbath and relax. The water is blue, the golden sand is thin and it is a quiet place within a natural environment. Completely unspoiled, it gives an idea of how the Mediterranean looked like a century ago before it has been destroyed by building constructions.
Once you find them, you will not be disappointed, they are absolutely delightful.
There are different ways to go there, but walking along the coast is in my opinion the best. The turquoise blue water is incredibly clear.
I love sunset colors, and I’ve not been disapointed by the spot. In Barcelona, the sun is blocked by the mountains, which was not the case there.
Without protection for my camera it was a bit scary to shoot from the middle of the sea, but it’s definitely worth it!
An overview of the Cala de la Roca Plana, with the light polution of Tarragona in the back. Some other people stayed until midnight, but after the beach was only for us.
Full moon night from the tent. What is better than being lulled by the waves?
Morning shot. This peaceful beach far from the city is a magic way to relax. People start to arrive quite early, but it was not crowded at all!

- By train: you can take a train in Barcelona Sants to Altafulla – Tamarit. It’s an hour if your take the Express train and it costs you 8€ to go. Then you will have to walk along the coast during 2 hours, passing by La Móra. It’s not easy, but it’s my favourite way to go there.

Don’t forget to bring food and drinks if you plan to spend a full day at the beach. There is no shop around!
Clothing is optional, too, as this is a known nudist beach.
⚠ Please remember to take care of the beach and nature, and do no leave your trash behind. ⚠
